As a traveler to Schengen area, one is permitted to travel to any of the member states freely with a single visa, generally known as Schengen visa. The holder of this visa can enter one country and travel to any part of Schengen zone until the visa is valid. There are very rare internal border checks and stoppages.
An application for Schengen Visa is required to be made at the Embassy or Consulate of the member state of Schengen region where one intends to spend most of his or her time during visit. If one intends to travel to only one country, then visa can be applied for at the Embassy or Consulate of that country. One must choose the suitable category of Schengen visa for his or her visit. The categories of Schengen visa are Category A, Category B, Category C and Category D.
Another pre-requisite in order to apply for Schengen visa is the valid Schengen visa insurance. This is a health insurance covering all the medical expenditure incurred and repatriation while one’s visit to the Schengen region. It should cover the period of the applied visa. Annual insurance may be necessary if you are making an application for a multi-entry visa.
