A guide describing different classes of Schengen visa


The Schengen region has set up a uniform visa system that differentiates the categories of visa.

The visa category A is an airport transit visa. It is relevant for the citizens of those countries which do not form part of Visa waiver agreement and are required to get Schengen visa to travel in this area. This visa is valid for a maximum of 120 hours. The travelling needing to transit only through the international area of the airport for travelling from one non-Schengen country to another is to acquire this visa type. The holder of this visa is permitted to stay in the airport transit area and not to leave this area in any case. 

The type B visa is also a transit visa. The person who has to transit through the area of one or more Schengen visa countries before going to a third country can apply for this visa kind. The holder of this transit visa is permitted to use overland transport for the purpose of transiting. This visa may be put through routing limitations. 

The category C visa is a Visitor visa needed by the citizens of non-exempted third-countries. This visa is valid for a maximum time interval of 90 days and is granted to the leisure and corporate travelers.

The last visa type is the D type which is a national visa is required for a longer stay exceeding the 90-day validity of type C visa. It is subject to the rules of the specific member country for which it is applied for.

The Schengen pact mandates for those visiting Schengen zone to acquire Schengen visa insurance in order to get the visa granted.
